Surplus food is one of the biggest sources of waste in western society. The average American throws away about twenty pounds of food each week, yet one in five children in America go hungry. An increasing number of families are feeling the pressure of rising food costs and are resorting to eating cheap, unhealthy foods.

Buying direct from the source can afford incredible savings on quality food, but sometimes result in surpluses. We challenge Food Commune members to directly identify people in need among their circles of friends and neighbors. A helping hand from someone they know can be far more dignified than a trip to the food bank or welfare office for some people.

Food Commune will soon provide tools to help manage group surpluses to give support to people in need.
